"Michael Mon" Launching Day - November 1, 2001

The strange name is what my son called himself when he started to talk.

My brother took a number of pictures and this one was printed in the "Launchings" section of WoodenBoat Magazine.

September Sail 2013

Launching Day

The launching was in the Cooper River in New Jersey.  It really isn't much of "river," but convenient.

Launching Day

Even in a developed area some tranquil scenes can be found.

The whole family was aboard for the first sail.

This shot my brother took made a nice desktop background.

Union Lake - December 2, 2006

It looks pretty tranquil here, but we are in the lee of a point of land - it was a pretty windy day.  As you can see, the sail has been reefed to the first set of points (and did not set perfectly).  It seemed a little conservative when we set out, but we were sure glad later as we pounded along tacking into waves which fetched across the long (~2.5 miles) length of lake in December 2006.

Another photo from Union Lake - notice the spray on the deck.  The water looks fairly calm, but there was a short 1 foot chop with whitecaps.  The nice thing was that the boat always seemed under control. and we weren't hanging over the side as we were used to doing in other small boats.

Union Lake - December 2, 2006

Reefed sail.  Even with the reefed sail we went over 6mph a few times.  Hull speed (~5.3mph) was fairly common.

The reef points should really be tied under the sail and not under the boom.
